Every year, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) conducts a special one-hour trading session on Diwali, known as Muhurat Trading. This unique practice has been followed for decades and holds deep cultural and financial significance.
The word “Muhurat” means an auspicious time. Traditionally, families in India begin new ventures, accounts, and investments on Diwali, marking it as a festival of prosperity and wealth creation. Extending this tradition, the stock markets open briefly in the evening on Diwali day, allowing investors to buy or sell shares during this symbolic session.
For many traders and investors, placing even a small order during Muhurat Trading is considered a good omen. It is not just about profits, but about starting the new Samvat year (the traditional Hindu calendar year) with positivity.
While the session may be short, the participation is high, and the atmosphere is festive. Many brokerage firms also share their annual outlooks, and investors take this time to realign portfolios for the year ahead.
In short: Muhurat Trading blends India’s rich traditions with modern financial markets, making it a unique celebration of culture and capital growth.
Muhurat Trading 2025: This year’s Muhurat Trading Session will be hel on October 21, to mark the occasion of Diwali. It will be held for one hour in the afternoon. According to the NSE circular, the Muhurat Trading window will open at 1:45 pm and close at 2:45 pm.
